RFID enables a fast and convenient way to sell food that’s right on the money

RFID is helping Sterling Services to implement a new service model that sets a new standard for convenience.

BACKGROUND
Sterling Services is a leading food services provider in the Detroit metro area. The company supplies vending, dining room management and executive catering to a wide variety of clients – from offices and schools to fitness clubs and hospitals.

CHALLENGE Sterling Services aspired to implement a new service model that would set a new standard for convenience while positively impacting sales.

SOLUTION

  • Sterling Services now operates unmanned stores on customers’ premises that are open 24/7 and offer 300 to 400 items for purchase.
  • Warehouse workers use a Zebra® RZ400™ printer to batch-print UPM ShortDipole RFID tags as small-format pressure sensitive labels and apply them to products.
  • Customers pay for items at an RFID-powered self-check-out kiosk, which automatically detects RFID-tagged goods, totals the cost and processes payments.
SUCCESS
  • Store data is transmitted to Sterling Services’ backend software, enabling the company to closely monitor inventory and sales.
  • The RFID-enabled solution prevents the theft of merchandise. If a customer tries to leave the store without paying, fixed RFID readers sound an alarm.
