RFID baggage tagging ensures on-time arrivals

RFID is helping Korea Airports Corporation implement a track-and-trace system for airline baggage that’s right on-time.

BACKGROUND
Korea Airports Corporation provides a high-quality flying experience for domestic and international passengers passing through the country’s 14 airports.

CHALLENGE
It’s imperative that the company reunites travellers with their luggage upon arrival. Misplaced baggage is a problem estimated by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to cost the world’s airline industry $3.6 billion annually.

SOLUTION
Korea Airports Corporation has allocated a budget of $3.3 million to purchase 98 fixed RFID readers, 85 printers and 350,000 UPM Rabbit RFID inlays.

SUCCESS By implementing RFID technology, Korea Airports Corporation is delivering on its brand promise of on-time arrival for both passengers and baggage, while driving down the costs associated with resolving baggage claims. In fact, IATA predicts that airlines leveraging RFID to streamline baggage handling can reduce the number of baggage claims by a noteworthy 12–15 percent annually.
